Blog 1: Guess what I find in Versailles' Secret Chambers

Oh là là, what a scent-sational day at Versailles! Ever wonder why French perfumes are so fabulously famous? Well, our exclusive tour to the secret chambers of Versailles spilled some fragrant secrets of the royal past that you won’t find on your typical tourist trail.

Imagine Paris in the 18th century, not just the city of love, but, honestly, a bit of a stinker. With streets that reeked and royals who rarely bathed (yes, King Louis XIV bathed just once over 64 years!), the French had to find a chic solution. Enter the divine world of perfumes! Initially battling body odors with scents like musk and ambergris, the Parisians eventually turned their noses towards more pleasant plant-based aromas.

But wait—there’s more to this olfactory adventure! Tucked away in the royal library, I discovered a treasure trove of Chinese porcelain plates and vases, and even the curtains were adorned with Chinese elements.

From the 13th century onwards, France opened its gates to beautiful elements from around the world, enriching their aesthetic taste and cultural tapestry. This melding of Eastern and Western art forms has contributed greatly to the French flair for the exquisite.

This aromatic and artistic journey began right where it mattered most, in Grasse—a town as fragrant as the fields of flowers it hosts, thanks to its humid Riviera climate. Grasse transformed from a mere town to the perfume capital of the world, cultivating scents that would mask even the most stubborn stinks of Parisian streets.

Fast forward to today, and French perfumes are still leading the scent scene, blending ancient allure with modern mastery. From courtly concoctions to contemporary chic, the fragrance of France has come a long way from merely masking malodors to setting the gold standard in global glamour. Isn’t history just breathtaking?

Next stop, Let’s go to to Dior and louise vittuon family house!
