AN ORIGINAL TRAVEL BLOG SERIES
Do you want to know a secret? I'm an "imposter," or so that was the narrative I once harbored in the innermost corners of my psyche.
Despite industry recognition, including an Emmy-awards nomination, or nearly 15 years of proven success at leading U.S. media companies, I could not shed the feeling that I did not belong in the spaces in which I occupied. However, during my second week in France, I would be not only be reminded that I belong, but in fact, in many instances, I was overqualified!
Let me explain.
At the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity, I had the opportunity to network with many high-profile power brokers in communications, marketing and advertising. Specifically, I connected with strong, like-minded women at the "Equality Lounge," a hub sponsored by the Female Quotient. The lounge was built to advance "equality together with other leading and forward-thinking brands."
There, in the safe space of the lounge, I engaged in conversations with female CMOs, EVPs, top LinkedIn influencers and more. Often, we discussed the dreaded "imposter syndrome," its impact on our work, and how it can manifest itself in professional settings. In addition, we also spoke of breaking through the "glass ceiling," a feat which can still feel insurmountable (though not impossible) in 2023. Their stories of resilience, success, and kindness (to oneself and others) inspired me. It also renewed my sense of confidence and purpose.
Bottomline, through these networking experiences, it's clear that I'm not an imposter. Instead, I'm an all-around BOSS!
It's evident that some narratives do not serve us. In fact, they can hinder us from being our true selves and achieving our full potential.
As such, here are some of the key takeaways from theFQ Equality Lounge
(*spoiler alert, you may know this already, but if nothing else, let these tips serve as a reminder*) :
Your personal brand is just as important as any companies. Treat it as such!
Align yourself with people, such as a mentor, that will not only support your growth but will also remind you of your power.
Most importantly- you belong. In EVERY room. Period!
Stay well friends. Until next time.
