Musée Marmottan Monet, located in Paris on the corner of Rue Louis Boilly in the 16th arrondissement, is famous for its collection of impressionist paintings, holding the largest collection of works by Claude Monet in the world. In this GFI course, I had the opportunity to experience 19th-century French art with my classmates and professors on a guided tour.

The afternoon sunlight penetrates through the antique windows and shines into this building with a rich art collection. The warm, humid summer air adds another special romantic touch to the warm tone of the restoration.

At the entrance of the first floor, this beautiful sculpture caught my attention. This Cupid and Psyche is dated 1845 and was sculpted by Giovanni Maria Benzoni.

Yes! Musée Marmottan has not only Claude Monet's artwork, but also many sculptures, original furniture, decorative objects and more from the same period.

Before visiting Monet's paintings, we browsed through Berthe Morisot's work.

She is a painter I like very much. Her brushwork is delicate and life-affirming.

Last but not least, we went to the basement of the museum, which is fully air-conditioned and houses Claude Monet's paintings. Right in front of our eyes was Claude Monet's portrait of Michel Monet, Claude's second son and only heir, donor of these Claude's artwork. This reminds me of the very famous exhibit in the Van Gogh Museum of Art in Amsterdam of the almond blossoms painted by Van Gogh for the birth of his nephew, who was also the founder of the museum.

Many huge, Claude Monet paintings from late in his life hang on the walls. The narrator said that Claude Monet experienced degeneration of his eyesight in his old age, so the brushstrokes of the paintings became wider and the colors became darker. These huge paintings are highly appreciated, but I enjoyed many of his earlier paintings even more. They are clearer in line and brighter in color. Although they have a much less personal representative style, I feel it makes me feel better while viewing them.

This painting made me look at it for a long time. Later I bought a portable shopping bag printed with this painting at a souvenir store and gave it to my friend when I got home.

There is also a special exhibition called Monet / Fehr: A Bridge, A Field, A Country Without End. The Swiss painter Marc-Antoine Fehr has taken two paintings by Claude Monet to create an artistic dialogue.

The classic artwork and spirit still serve as an inspiration for European art today. The heritage and philosophies of this land stretch through history, nourishing the bloodline of human art that now influences everyone on this blue planet.
